Project Description
Between 2018 and 2019, through the Urban Fishing Cat Conservation Project, our umbrella organization, we held 20 Wetland Weekend programs, which had over 300 participants (collectively) at the Diyasaru Park in Thalawathugoda. Programs were held on the third Saturday of each month and focused on a specific topic relating to urban wetlands or urban wildlife. The talks also alternated monthly between kids and adults.
Our kids programmes were delivered in a more exciting and visual method to hold their attention, while youth and adult programs were more technical. We also wanted our audience to connect with the topic of the month, and therefore ensured that there was always a field-based activity which took place after the lecture. Each program also had a guest speaker who was an expert in that particular field. To date we have covered some interesting topics, such as:
- Freshwater fish
- Saltwater crocodiles
- Otters
- Living in a wetland city
- Indoor air pollution
- Insects
- Raptors / Birds of Prey
- Pug marks and Poop
- Western purple-faced leaf monkeys
- Fishing cats
